In a significant move that shows respect and thankfulness, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s iconic No. 7 jersey. The decision comes three years after Dhoni said “GoodBye” to international cricket, serving as a tribute to the former captain’s blissful career.
Dhoni’s retirement marks the end of an era and reflects his unparalleled impact on Indian cricket. This idealism ensured that the number 7 will forever be associated with Dhoni’s greatest achievements and leadership on the field.
The period of 2007-2013 was possibly the golden period of Indian Cricket and one can’t forget Dhoni’s contribution all those years as Captain. He led India to 3 whiteball ICC titles – 1 T20 WC in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. BCCI’s this move comes after after 4 years when they first decided to retire Legend Sachin Tendulkar’s No.10 Jersey.
It is worth noting that the BCCI has announced to national cricketers, especially debutants, that numbers related to Tendulkar and Dhoni are not available for selection. The decision does not allow new players to wear Dhoni’s number 7 or Tendulkar’s number 10, ensuring that the legacy of these great icons remains intact.
In India, where the choice of jersey numbers is limited, the holiday of this iconic symbol shows respect for the legend. Even if a player leaves the team for a while, BCCI does not allocate his number to new players and leaves a limit for new players.
