Punjab Kings released a statement on Wednesday, claiming that they had chosen the correct cricketer during the IPL auction in Dubai, denying allegations that they had bid for the ‘wrong’ player owing to name confusion.
Shashank Singh was acquired near the end of the auction on Tuesday as franchises wanted uncapped Indian players in the Rs 20 lakh range.
When the auctioneer called out Shashank’s name, Preity Kinta, PBKS co-owner, lifted the paddle, and the cricketer was quickly sold. According to reports, the franchise later realized the apparent mistake and asked the auctioneer to rescind the transaction.
They released an official statement as “ The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success”
On Wednesday, a PBKS official informed PTI that the appropriate player had been identified and that he had been scouted by the franchise for some time.
“We have picked the right player. He was being scouted by us for quite some time. He is a 32-year-old player from Chhattisgarh who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2022 season,” said the PBKS official.
“Reports are confusing him with a 19-year-old cricketer with the same name”.
