Veteran New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner has announced his retirement from international cricket, culminating a remarkable 12-year Test career with the Black Caps. Wagner, aged 37, made the decision after learning he would not feature in the XI for the Test series against Australia commencing in Wellington on Thursday (February 29). He will be released from the squad ahead of the second Test in Christchurch, marking the conclusion of his international journey with 260 Test wickets – placing him fifth on New Zealand’s all-time charts – at an impressive strike-rate of 52.7, surpassed only by the legendary Sir Richard Hadlee among New Zealanders with over 100 Test wickets.

His Test debut against the West Indies in 2012 marked the beginning of a distinguished career, with career-best figures of 7 for 39 against the same opponents at Wellington five years later.

Wagner’s indomitable spirit, endurance, and precision, especially with his short-ball deliveries, earned him acclaim as a relentless bowler capable of unsettling even the most formidable batters, including Steve Smith.
