Shahzad is a major concern for the Boxing Day Test as he undergoes an MRI scan, casting doubt on his participation in the second Test.
Sent for an MRI scan, his involvement in the second Test seems doubtful.
Pakistan’s readiness for the Melbourne’s second Test has suffered a blow as Khurram Shahzad emerges as a major uncertainty. While bowling in the first Test, Shahzad experienced discomfort in his left side, leading to an MRI scan. Though the results are expected on Thursday, ESPNcricinfo suggests his presence in the second Test hangs in the balance.
Although Shahzad was not known for being an express fast bowler, his second innings saw a slight dip in speeds. Despite this, he remained effective, emerging as Pakistan’s most productive bowler by claiming 3 for 45 in his 16 overs.
Shahzad’s uncertainty compounds Pakistan’s mounting bowling injury troubles. Naseem Shah’s long-term injury forced him out of the tour, and Abrar Ahmed’s absence in the first Test due to discomfort in his right leg makes him a substantial doubt for the entire tour.
His replacement Noman Ali sustained a finger injury according to head coach Mohammad Hafeez. Sajid Khan, flown in as cover, arrived too late to play the first Test, and is expected to take his place in the second with Pakistan seeking to play a specialist spinner.
In the event of Shahzad’s absence, Pakistan can turn to Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jnr from their squad. The upcoming second Test commences on December 26 in Melbourne. Ahead of the Test, Pakistan has scheduled a two-day match against a Victorian XI at the Junction Oval starting December 22. This non-first-class fixture provides Pakistan the flexibility to field as many players as necessary for valuable game time.
