IPL 2024 Auction: Mallika Sagar Makes History as First Female Auctioneer in IPL

The IPL 2024 Auction promises more than just the thrilling battle for star players; it’s set to make history with the arrival of Mallika Sagar as the IPL’s first female auctioneer. This groundbreaking move brings a fresh perspective to the bidding floor, adding a significant chapter to the tournament’s legacy. At 48, Mallika boasts a rich, 25-year experience in the auctioneering domain, having embarked on her journey at Christie’s in New York. Her academic roots lie in Art History, where she pursued her majors at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia, eventually becoming the first female auctioneer from India at Christie’s, an international auction house.

Although Mallika’s introduction to the IPL isn’t her maiden venture into sports auctions—having overseen auctions for Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL)—her inclusion in the IPL 2024 Auction marks a historic moment. December 19 will stand out as a significant milestone in her illustrious career, as she steps into the spotlight of one of cricket’s most significant events.

Mallika’s entry into the IPL replaces Hugh Edmeades, who faced health challenges during the IPL 2022 mega auction. Edmeades’ incident, attributed to ‘postural hypotension,’ led to his replacement in the previous edition. The move to replace him with Mallika showcases a commitment to diversity and innovation within the league, as well as a nod to Mallika’s seasoned expertise and impressive track record in the auctioneering domain.

This pivotal auction is scheduled to kick off at 1 pm IST on December 19, with Star Sports broadcasting the live action on television. Those preferring online streaming can catch every moment of the intense bidding war on the Jio Cinema app and its website. Mallika Sagar’s appointment is not just a change in personnel; it’s a symbolic step forward, setting a new precedent in the history of the IPL, signaling inclusivity and celebrating Mallika’s pioneering role as the tournament’s inaugural female auctioneer.
