At 36, after a remarkable 12-year international journey, Elgar has chosen the very turf where he marked his debut and engraved his name in the annals of cricket history.

In a poignant statement, Elgar expressed, “Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine, but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! It has been an incredible journey beyond my wildest dreams.”
Cape Town, his “favourite stadium in the world,” will witness Elgar’s final innings, where he not only scored his first Test run against New Zealand but hopes to conclude a career that boasts 5146 runs, making him South Africa’s eighth-highest Test run-scorer. A mere 352 runs shy of Mark Boucher, Elgar leaves an indelible mark on the crease.
In an era dominated by innovation and power-hitting, Elgar stands out as a rare old-school cricketer, known for his ability to dig in, absorb pressure, and fight relentlessly. Enoch Nkwe, CSA director of cricket, pays tribute, stating, “He is a real old-school cricketer that can dig in, absorb and fight. I have no doubt the game will dearly miss him.”
The decision to retire comes amidst speculations of Elgar not fitting into the long-term plans of red-ball coach Shukri Conrad, leading to links with Essex for the 2024 season.
Elgar’s international journey saw him debut in 2012 in Perth against Australia, recording a pair on debut but rebounding with a century in his third match. Notably, he scored against all Test opposition except Pakistan and Zimbabwe, with Sri Lanka being his favorite opponents.
