Pat Cummins: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Potential Captain? Simon Doull Speculates

Simon Doull has raised queries regarding Pat Cummins’ potential captaincy role with the Sunrisers Hyderabad and ponders over the team’s strategy to integrate him into their lineup following his staggering record-breaking bid in the IPL Auction 2024.

Cummins grabbed headlines with his extraordinary acquisition by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2024 auction. The Australian fast bowler, also a World Cup-winning captain in ODIs, was secured for a whopping Rs 20.50 crore after an intense bidding battle.

This valuation not only positioned him among the costliest players in IPL history but also briefly held the record for the highest bid ever made in the league.

Despite opting out of the 2023 season due to extensive international commitments, Cummins expressed keenness to join the “Orange Army” and contribute significantly to their achievements.

While SRH coach Daniel Vettori hinted at a possible change in leadership, the certainty of Cummins assuming the role of skipper remains uncertain for now. However, during an interaction with Star Sports, Doull expressed the likelihood of Cummins taking on this responsibility given the signs from SRH.

Doull pondered over Cummins’ potential role within the lineup considering the substantial investment made by SRH and the team’s existing high-quality players.

“Maybe they are seeking a captain. We’ve joked a bit about it. Does (Aiden) Markram feature in every game now? They haven’t announced their skipper. Does Pat Cummins assume leadership? Will he play more matches than a (Marco) Jansen next year?”

“That’s the big question. Having made such a substantial investment, they need to get him into the team. Where does he fit in, and whose place does he take? They possess numerous top-notch overseas talents,” Doull highlighted.
